Black Gold, Texas Tea.
Over the weekend, we watched the movie Syriana. As far as movies go, it was a slow story without much to move it along. However, we were impressed with the balance in which it presented very relevant statements about the world today. As an ensemble story, it pulled together many different sub-stories that all centered around the global oil industry.
We spent a long time, after the movie, discussing our reactions and thoughts. To me, a movie that makes me think and talk long after it is over, is well worth the two hours out of my afternoon. Even now, I am still processing my thoughts and feelings that were stirred by the film.
I think that it is good to question our political beliefs and positions, especially now that we are living in such a global society. If something is considered best for America, but detrimental to another country, is that really the best thing? If we are all people, and all equal, how can I support something that betters my life but oppresses another life?
“Anyone who’s visiting in Morocco or Casablanca and you hear the sirens go off three to five times a day and everyone gets out of their car to kneel and pray…if some one thinks they can bomb that ideal out of them, well…they need to travel more.” –George Clooney
“If a country has 5% of the world’s population and 50% of the world’s military spending, that country’s power of persuasion is on the decline.” –Syriana
I recommend seeing the movie for yourself. This one’s going on my list.

We watche Syriana this weekend too. It reminded me of Munich in that it was very sad, but had a relevant message.

i’m sorry, but is anyone really trying to bomb Islam out of anyone? maybe i’m just naive, but that’s kind of a ridiculous statement. true, but ridiculous. sorry.

Don’t be sorry. I don’t know that anyone is trying to do that, but I did find the quote to be thought-provoking. You’ll have to ask George as to what sparked his comment. And when you do, tell him I said HI and that he really should stop making “Oceans” sequels!
