Who is He, then?

I had a recent conversation with a dear friend that has left me thinking a lot about how we/I view God. I am amazed at how many times we hear the phrase, “Well, MY God isn’t like that,” or “MY God is like this.” Since when is there YOUR God and MY God? God is God. Unchanging. Never ceasing. He belongs to no one and is controlled or defined by no one but Himself.

So, I think what we are really saying is “this is how I view God.” And, I think it is very important to know how you view Him, as long as your views are correct. Too many times, I think we accept false understandings of God because it’s easy or convenient. But, then we don’t really know God. We only know an image of Him that we have created in our own minds. And, as long as we accept this false image or understanding of God, we base our lives on things that are not true. Our understanding of God almost always defines our understanding of ourselves and our circumstances. If that understanding is skewed in any way, so is our perception of our own selves.

I think we have to come to a point where we give up relying on our own views and understanding, which many times are defined by how we feel about ourselves, and allow God to remove our filters and falsities so that we see Him in truth. Only then can we have a true understanding of who He is and who we are because of how He loves us.

Sorry if I am rambling. I just long to understand truth and be quick to discern it from what is false. Thoughts like this become a passion in my heart because I hate to think how lies tried to ruin my life, and I’ll be darned if I sit quietly and watch it happen to another person.
