Things most often heard at job interviews these days.

“OH LOOK, you’re pregnant!”
“I’ve heard a lot about you. The most interesting thing to me is that you’re pregnant.”
“I can’t imagine trying to find a job while you’re pregnant.”
“Don’t worry, we’re a family-friendly organization. I have two kids, myself.”
“My biggest concern is that you’ll have to lift a lot of boxes.”
“Of course, there is no guarantee that you’ll even be able to come back after the baby is born.”
AND MY FAVORITE….
“So, do you have career goals now?”

So, have you had anyone ask how much weight you’ve gained? I always loved that one. Or ask if you are having twins. It is amazing the questions people ask pregnant women.

“So, do you have career goals now?â€
“Yes, I am thinking of studying law. I would have thought by 2007 people wouldn’t discriminate, but funny how it still happens.”

As a working mom, let me say that “So, do you have any career goals now” really isn’t that offensive to me. Becoming a parent is a BIG responsibility and takes up a lot of time and energy. I think one parent should stay home with children if at all possible. I would say the majority of mothers would quit their jobs or at least work part-time if given the opportunity. And of I all of the moms I know personally, ALL of them would quit their jobs in a heartbeat and give up “career goals” if it was an option. Not having career goals doesn’t make you less of a person. It simply means your values and priorities have shifted. And there is nothing shameful or wrong about that.
