For Sale By Owner.

For the past few days, we have felt like we are fumbling through the process of selling our house. We put a sign in our yard on Friday and received our first call just a couple hours later. We’ve already shown the house to five different prospects and have at least one still scheduled. Needless to say, we have quickly learned a few things about selling your house on your own.

NUMBER ONE: Impromptu showings are okay ONLY if you are sure that the house is presentable. It can be quite embarrassing to walk into the master bedroom, with buyers in tow, and see your very unflattering nursing bra hanging from the knob on your closet door. You should really make sure that those are put away before strangers walk through your house.

NUMBER TWO: It’s a good idea to either put your dog in the crate or take him over to the neighbors’ house while prospective buyers are around. I can’t imagine that it would make a great impression to be viewing the back yard and see the owners’ dog walk to the very middle of the yard, squat and poop. Dogs don’t seem to have a good sense about what’s appropriate when you’re trying to impress the very nice strangers into buying your house.

Other than that, I think the selling process has started off nicely! Let’s hope that it doesn’t take too long.
